I've been considering creating a Greek site for opencaching for some time. Geocaching isn't really popular here, and Groundspeak "pay or leave" policies are scaring away any potential new users.

I've been reading about the opencaching sites, and it makes sense to me to be a part of the .de site, since unification is better anyway, and judging from Groundspeak's users, Germans are perhaps even more active than Greeks in Greece.

So, where should I start? I should note I don't understand German at all, so I hope the documentation/configuration is available in English. I haven't found an installation guide on the GitHub site.

Hi kourampies,

There are different options.
 • You cacn jion on the same server where oc.de is located
 • You can make your own Opencaching site with German code or Polish code.
You can look how the two codes are a bit different on www.opencaching.de and www.opencaching.pl. It is up to you what you like best.
The German code you can find on https://github.com/OpencachingDeutschland/oc-server3
The Polish code you can find on https://github.com/opencaching/opencaching-pl

If you would like to make your own site, there are always people who like to help you.

Greetings,
Harrie
Owner and allround admin of the Dutch OC node.

I decided on creating a site, because I want to translate it 100% and make it as easy as possible for Greek newbies.

If your plans evolve, please don't hesitate to get in touch to integrate the new site into c:geo as soon as possible. Furthermore you might want to consider getting the community involved to provide a greek translation for c:geo, to lower the barrier of entry even further.

My plans are exactly to integrate into c:geo asap, and In conjunction with proper tutorials (perhaps even in easily "digestible" video formats) make an easy to understand, step by step introduction, for free, new cachers which we are totally lacking here.

Hi,
I'm andrixnet and I am the owner and admin of www.opencaching.ro.
I have installed and configured my site from scratch, on my linux distro of choice, with help from harrieklomp and the polish team.
I also translated 100% of c:geo into romanian.
Since then I've been involved in the further development of opencaching-pl source code and I helped harrieklomp (of OCNL) and MrYuck (of OCUS) with various server administration tasks and I am currently working with MrYuck to migrate www.opencaching.us from a very old version of the polish code to the current version (with some improvements as well).

If you whish, I am willing to help you get started and up and running.

Sending you my contact details in private.

@OCDE team: based on https://wiki.opencaching.eu/index.php/Node_IDs, would node_ID=17 be ok?

Hellas kourampies!

Whats about this plan:
Before hosting and developing an own Project, join our German Team and help to translate from english to greek.

So this is our latest Roadmap.

We are going to refacture our Source Code.
The German Source Code is the original one ;)

We have reconized, that the highest problem is to connect with all notes and exchange all geocaches.
For this; a visitor ist only able to see those caches who are in their local database.

With our new idea, we want to provide one database for all cachers - started in Germany - focused on Europe.
If you will go ahead and just help to translate - we will be able to provide a global plattform.

You may check our Translation Tool on https://crowdin.com/project/opencaching Bild.
If you are interested to help; i will give your more detail informations and that will help alot.

I'm familiar with Crowdin, I see that the translation strings are very few, this is literally a few minutes of work for me. Is that really all? I guess you will also want me to translate wiki articles etc, but that's also not a problem.

I have no problem with what you are suggesting, I'm all about unifying the nodes, and if that means less work/responsibility for me, that's even better.

Still though I would like to use the opencaching.gr domain, even if it points out to a translated .de site. I think Greek people who are usually are not really in touch with technology will feel more comfortable with a .gr domain that will point them directly to the Greek version.

Hi kourampies,

i think that will work fine.
These files on Crowdin were just our "new" Framework.

I will write down more information on my mail.
Are you technically savvy?

I will contact you on your email - which is registeres here - okay?

If you have registered a .gr Domain, we can implement it like on http://www.opencaching.fr/ (its our Server and same Page)

Hello,

you can contact me in the email I use here anytime you want.

To be honest I'm leaning towards the .pl branch after exploring both sites and getting to know about them, and because I want to have more control over the site/menu options since my main focus will be to get new people to play (non experienced users, that perhaps never used Groundspeak).

But since I want to support the unification, and know that the Germans are probably the biggest group of players in Greece, I still want to hear your plans and ideas.

I'm very familiar with site building/hosting and Linux, so feel free to use any technical terms you want.

I just got the domain, but I still haven't decided if I want my own site or the Greek version of .de. :)

Hi kourampies,

I did the English translation of some wiki pages last year. There is an index of the translated pages:
http://wiki.opencaching.de/index.php/Opencaching_Website_Help

Some of the wiki pages are linked help pages from the opencaching.de menus and function. My intention was to offer English help pages for all people who switch to English at opencaching.de (or any other domain). So it is not a complete translation of everything, but probably the most important stuff for newbies. It is not a copy or derivate of the US help. The content is according to the original German pages and the German web pages (user GUI).
If there would be Greek help pages, I guess, the development team can link them with the Greek language.

Best, Siggi

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say I'm alive and still planning to do everything we talked about. I halted translating c:geo for a bit due to some unforeseen workload, but after June I ll have free time and I will complete the translation. After that, we move on to the site, as planned :)
