Ideas and plans to talk about

Hi @all,

i had a skype call with 'Coffee Peddlers'.
He asked for source code to operate opencaching.ca
http://forum.geocaching-network.com/http://localhost//viewtopic.php?t=0

Its new that someone with an own business wants to setup OC and invest the business capital to it.

Should we support him with source code or not?

I want to have your opinion because that may have future impact on strategy.
He said he it okay to share the caches within the OC network.

Kind regards,

Oliver
Hello Oliver,

Thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. A little about myself. I'm George Hatch from London Ontario Canada. I first heard about Opencaching from DudleyGrunt of Opencaching.us. Shortly after opencaching.us was started a fellow cacher known to Dudley and I purchased opencaching.ca. Do to time constraints he was not able to continue and transferred the domain to myself.

This is a summary of what I want to do and how I plan to achive my goals.

I currently have the opencaching.ca domain. Moving forward what my plan will be is to us my business to finance opencaching.ca until it reaches the point where the membership through donations can cover expenses. Opencaching.ca is regisitered to me personally and not my business. To the outside world no one will know where the financing will be coming from. My intention is not to turn opencaching into a commercial entity under my business.

I have so far received some resistance from the Central Ontario Geocaching Association members and no response from the Ontario Geocaching Association members and no response from the Southwestern Ontario Geocachers. What my plan to get people involved is to travel to each area and hide a small number of caches such as 5 or 6 and encourage the members to seek them out. There are 6 regions that I will visit to start off with and if I hide 5 or 6 caches I'm looking at 30 to 36 caches to place. I will go to my local surplus and try and work out a deal for ammo cans since those are the preferred type of container. Also each region is 1 to 2 hour drive from my home area so there will be expenses incurred before the site is fully up and running. These expenses will be covered by my business and that is the only involvement that my business will have.

I currently do not have the programming experience needed, to solve this I plan on seeking out an individual to assist me with this respect. Either a fellow geocacher that has the experience ( I know of 2 people I can approach) or a University student that is nearing the end of their schooling. That have the knowledge and this will give them some experience.

My intention first and foremost is to be part of the opencaching team. I will work with this community and follow the direction given by it. If there are ways that things must be done than I will do it that way.

Again thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers
George

Hello all,

I think is is not a problem to help 'Coffee Peddlers'.with the code because it is a private project for him and it is not on a commercial basis.
Owner and allround admin of the Dutch OC node.

I think the idea is a good one. But on the other hand we should try to get donations for the project. Maybe he could be one of the first node, trying to promote opencaching with trading items like shirts.

#  My intention is not to turn opencaching into a commercial entity under my business.

That sounds not too bad,
Give him a chance!

I do know CP from other caching forums and look forward to seeing what he does.

I'd actually be interested in seeing if he's be interested in working in a close cooperative manner with OCUS from the start.  Given that OC is trying to get a more cohesive nature to the various sites, it would seem like a good idea to do so from the start.

Just as a wild idea, I wonder if we should really be looking at OpenCaching North America, as maybe one, unified site.  Apparently, Jerry has had a brief initial positive response from CP about general cooperation.

For my opinion it will bettter go to one site North America base on OC US but who call opencaching.ca will be redirect to oc.us
Maybe you can buy opencaching.mx domain for complet of NA domain OC

Okay, i added him to the developer-forum group.
So he can read now the topic and has access to the sources.

Thank you for feedback.

And welcome George!
Coffee Peddlers

Thank you very much.

Jerry maybe you get to who can try translate file lib/languages/en on OC US to other languages like French which use use in Canad and to Spanish which is use in Mexico. You can make more friendly UI to this country in NA
